Weekly Reading Discussion: Week 1

Hi everyone. As I was looking over the posts by fellow classmates in response to the weekly readings, I found myself wanting open up informal discussion regarding the material. Because commenting on the formal post might make grading harder for Dr. Johns, I thought this would be a more appropriate place.

Dr. Johns, please let me know if there is a better way to achieve informal discussion over the blog.

I'll open up with a question: Imagine the presentation of a creature such as Frankenstein's in modern society (assume we didn't know he was reanimated; we are ignorant to his origins). Would a large/ugly man receive the same reception today as the creature did in the novel? Might instead he be perceived as a medical miracle, or an object of Ripley's believe it or not? Think:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Wadlow  or  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Merrick
